Peak Day Plus in the FYI

We posted 'participants wanted' notice in the University of Utah FYI Newsletter yesterday and have been overwhelmed by responses!

Don't stop volunteering - we want to hit our recruitment goals - but please be patient because it might take a few days to get back to everyone who has emailed.

Thanks!!

Congratulations

Congratulations to Jessica, who sent us this photo at 15 weeks pregnancy (and expressed that we could post it to our blog). When asked what she liked most about participating in the Peak Day study, she wrote "I think it really helped me to achieve pregnancy. Also, I just found it really interesting to know so much about my body." We wish her good luck on a continued healthy pregnancy!

May 2010

Greetings PEAK Day women!

We recently presented about the study at the Utah Public Health Association Conference in Midway. There were many interested potential participants and others who planned to pass the information along to friends.

Recruitment is still open for both phases of the study - charting alone is available for anyone in the USA, and the optional fertility monitor phase is available for women in Salt Lake City.

Do you know anyone trying to get pregnant? Send her our way! You can email us (peakday@utah.edu), call us (801) 587-3316, or find us on Facebook!

Study materials are also available in Spanish.

Peak Day Study Update

Since recruitment began, 46 women have enrolled in the Peak Day study. Of those, 97% have correctly estimated their EDO at least once with the average number of cycles before identifying their EDO being 1.23 (range 1-2). The majority of women (65.4%) solely used cervical fluid observations to identify their EDO and 100% of the participants, who charted, consistently answered the 1-page monthly exposure questionnaire located on the back of their charts. Of the 25 women who enrolled seeking to become pregnant, nearly half of them (n=12)have become pregnant using the Peak Day method of monitoring their cervical fluid.

Recently, all study materials have been translated into Spanish so that we can include women for whom Spanish is their primary language. Additionally, in order to validate the Peak Day method, we are distributing fertility monitors that test urine hormone levels to newly enrolled participants.

We hope to enroll 120 women in this pilot study, including 20 for whom Spanish is their primary language. If you know of any woman between the ages of 18-44 who is not using hormonal contraception and is not currently pregnant or breastfeeding please refer them to our study. For further information, visit our website or facebook fan page.

Peak Day Update

As of today, we have 23 participants who have enrolled and are keeping fertility charts.

5 of our participants have become pregnant while using the Peak Day method for tracking their fertility! We don't promise this as a benefit of the study, but learning about how your fertility changes during your cycle can only help if you are trying to get pregnant.

Dr. Porucznik, the principal investigator, wasn't an official participant, but she did use the charts until she got pregnant. We expect the first Peak Day baby to be born in the next few weeks!

Peak Day is on Facebook

We're still recruiting and would love it if you pass along info about the Peak Day Study to anyone you know who might be interested. You can give them the website (http://medicine.utah.edu/dfpm/peakday/) or have them email us (peakday@utah.edu) for more information or to volunteer. Participants can live anywhere in the USA, not just in Utah.

We have started a Facebook group, too - check us out or if you are in Facebook, you can search for "peak day" and we come up 1st!! That's another way we are trying to spread the word about this study.

Changing Voices for the Summer

Greetings all - just wanted to let you know that Karen, our research coordinator, has relocated to Washington DC for a summer internship at the National Institutes of Health. She will be missed but ably replaced for the summer by Nirupma Singh. It will be Nirupma taking your calls, answering your emails, and following up on your charts.

On the topic of charts, please remember to mail them in (or submit online) as soon as you complete a chart! This way, we can review them quickly and help you catch any misunderstandings sooner rather than later. Also, don't hesitate to call {(801) 587-3316} or email (peakday@utah.edu) if you have questions about the charting instructions. We're here to help.

Another Study of Interest

Are you are between the ages of 18-40 years old, have had ONE or TWO pregnancy losses in the past, and want to become pregnant again? A study by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) with the University of Utah, the University at Buffalo, The Commonwealth Medical College (Scranton, PA), and Haifa University is seeking participants.

Available information shows that low-dose aspirin (LDA) may improve pregnancy outcomes. LDA appears to be safe and has few side effects. The Effects of Aspirin in Gestation and Reproduction(EAGeR) trial is studying the effects of LDA taken before pregnancy and continuing through week 36 of pregnancy.

If you or anyone you know is interested in participating in this study, contact 1-866-912-1967 or email eagertrial@som.utah.edu. Or click on their above logo to be directed to their website.

Peak Day Study Update

Greetings to our Peak Day participants. We currently have enrolled 16 participants from various locations across the Salt Lake Valley (4 from Draper, 4 from Riverton, 3 from Herriman, 2 from Lehi, 2 from Salt Lake City, 2 from South Jordan, 2 from Taylorsville, 1 from North Salt Lake, 1 from Sandy and 1 from West Valley City). The average age of our participants is 27 years old.

While we don't have sufficient data yet to present any statistical results, this tracking method does seem to help women identify their PEAK DAY. Four our of our 16 participants have become pregnant after joining the study and beginning to monitor their sign of fertility.

We hope to enroll a total of 100 women for the Peak Day Study. If you have any friends or acquaintances who may be interested in participating, please pass along our number (801-587-3316) or our email address (peakday@utah.edu).

Also, if you have any questions or problems with this method of charting, submitting your charts via mail or online, or with the study in general, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Thank you all for your continued participation.

Welcome to the PEAK DAY Study Blog!

Thanks to everyone for participating in the PEAK DAY study, sending us your charts, and chatting with Karen on the phone!

We thought it would be a good idea to create a place where we can share information with you about the study and how it is going.

We'll try to update regularly and let you know about any exciting new developments. In the meantime this can be another source of information and connection for you.
